Weekend with Buddie

“I wish that you were here, but you’re not. You’re there. And there doesn’t know how lucky it is.”

Found this quote somewhere and it is so true. I feel like this a lot when I miss people.

Just had a fantastic three day weekend hanging out with my Buddie. Just relaxing and doing whatever we felt like. Sleeping in. Taking goofy pictures, getting coffee together [her first and I made it ;),] going out to movies and eating frozen yogurt. Buying matching Toms and going shopping and watching the Olympics.

It was great.

I miss her.

But I am eagerly awaiting our next adventure… should be exciting as always. 😉

Cherry Almond Breakfast Cookies {DIY Wednesdays}

Okay, okay… using the word “cookie” might be a bit of a stretch, but these little numbers are fantastic, healthful, very easy, and they taste pretty good too. 😉

I used this recipe, but made several modifications {minor ones} so I will just tell you what I did. My yield was 12 large cookies.

You will need:

1.5 cups rolled oats {I used GF rolled oats}
1 cup coconut flakes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/4 cup of almond meal
1 cup almonds, chopped
1 cup dried cherries {mine were tart cherries}, chopped

3 ripe bananas, mashed
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Image

Image

Combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then inhale very deeply because that will probably be the most amazing thing you smell all day.

Once you’re done enjoying that heavenly aroma… combine all the wet ingredients into another bowl, being sure to mash up the bananas.

Image

Then add the wet ingredients to the dry ones and mix thoroughly.

Image

Press the batter into a cookie cutter, I used a heart shape for fun and because we dont have a round cookie cutter anymore. 😉

Image

Bake at 350F for about 20 minutes to start out. Leaving them in longer depending on how thick your cookies are. Mine were pretty thick and I ended up baking them for 35 minutes total, but my oven is rather stupid and temperamental so just keep an eye on them.

Image

They should be a lovely golden brown, but take them out before the edges burn. And there you go, a lovely, healthy, pre-made breakfast that everyone can enjoy.

Friendship and fruit smoothies

This is my friend Erika. I havent seen her or even really talked to her in nearly two years, but I have to say, she is one of the dearest friends I have. I love her very much. She texted me last week and said she was in town and wondered if we could get together. I am so happy it worked out. We sat at the mall and drank fruit smoothies and talked about life, and God and smiled and laughed.

It was amazing. I needed it so much.

Isnt she darling?

We all have people in our lives that we dont see all the time, but when we do see them, it’s as though they have always been there and we can pick up right where we left off. I think this is some sort of fellowship that a few people in the world have the privilege to belong to. It a bond with a person or group of people that doesnt weaken or fade with time or distance. Somehow, deep down, you know they’ll always be there if you need them. And they know that you’ll do the same for them. This is what makes it easy to just sit and talk whenever you get the chance, no matter how long it’s been since you last heard their voice.

Do you have people like this in your life? I hope so. If you dont, find some, right away, and be one in return. You’ll never regret it.

If you do have people like this in your life, call them up, and meet them somewhere. Then buy them a fruit smoothie and be encouraged by this incredible gift of friendship.

Happy 11th Cake Day, Beka-Boo!

This is my baby sister.

Today she turned 11.

I can remember bringing her home from the hospital in a pink outfit with a bow and in a car seat. Or singing All The Pretty Little Horses to her as I rocked her to sleep. Or reading Peter Rabbit so many times that I memorized it. Or having tea parties with a plastic teapot that sang when you poured.

Sigh. I wish she was turning 4, not 11.

But anyway, she’s growing up, a definite little diva, and quite happy to be turning 11. This evening we did a mini shoot on the front porch to commemorate the occasion. Oh and the flower in her hair was actually one I made to put on her present, but she liked it and insisted on wearing it as a headband and making me promise to make her more.

She’s so easy to please. Seriously.

I love you, Beka. Thank you so much for being the reason I’m not the only girl in this family. Happy birthday!

 Burlap Rosette {DIY Wednesday}

I decided to make one of these lovely little rosettes [from a blog post over at Oh Hello Friend Blog] this afternoon for DIY Wednesday.

However I wanted to change it up a bit by making it a lot bigger [finished, mine is 2.5″ diameter] and by making it out of some brown burlap I had on hand to add a rougher texture. It was great fun and I think it turned out well.

I will let you read the original tutorial here, and then just note what I changed.

Image

To start off, my burlap was 3″ wide and approximately 45″ long.

Image

After forming and gluing the rosette, it was a bit too shredded looking.

Image

So trim up the longer loose fibers.

Image

And I used a scrap piece of burlap to glue to the back instead of sewing felt. Hot glue is much faster than needle and thread. 😉 Then I glued on an alligator clip and a pin for some attachment options when wearing the rosette.

[note: my alligator clip is 1″ and the pin is 3/4″ I used them because it’s what I had, but next time I think I would use a longer one.]

Image

And there you go, a cute little accent with a lot of character.

Image

I think it’s going to be fantastic for fall.

Fight your way through…

“What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me . . . is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not.

“But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story.

“It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

{Ira Glass}

And speaking of creative work, I have a new Lightroom edit that I’m quite addicted to, and I’m currently using it on every image in sight. 😉 I’m like a kid in a candy store with a new edit. Seriously. They rock my world and make me happy to be alive.

May today, and every day, you find some reason to be happy you are alive. May you be ever willing to be a beginner. And may you fight your way through to be your absolute best at what you are most passionate about.

Favorites Friday :: Bookplates

I realized the other day that I adore bookplates.

They really are brilliant.

My mom had this really old set of the Chronicles of Narnia and they had really darling bookplates in the front that her grandmother had given to her. The book also were old and yellowed and smelled like adventure. Maybe that’s why I love bookplates, because I associate them with Narnia and that heavenly book smell.

Anyway, I found this at Anthropologie the other day and thought them perfectly darling, so my mom bought them for me because she loves me. 😉

Image

The colors are fantastic, and it even has one of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes.

Image

I adore the script font.

Image

It even has a typewriter! Love… love… love…

Now I just have to make myself open the package. 😉

Anyway, this made my heart smile and I thought I would share it with you. Remember to smile at the little silly things this weekend… oh, and happy Friday. 🙂

Almost a DIY Wednesday ;)

Okay okay, this isnt quiet a DIY, but I wanted to share this with you anyway. Personally, I think this is one of the most fantastic things I’ve seen in a long time.

Magnets from Instagram Pictures.

http://stickygram.com/

Now you can take all those Walden and Earlybird edited memories and post them on your wall… your fridge wall, that is, I expect they’re already posted on your Facebook. 😉

I havent ordered any yet, but I’m sure that I will be using this handy dandy site in the not too distant future.
